The Canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII

Today April 27, 2014 will be a historical day for catholic especially the youth as two popes now ascend their titles from blessed into saints. Blessed Pope John XXIII and Blessed Pope John Paul II will now be canonized into the company of saints with the ceremony to be led by Pope Francis.

Blessed Pope John XXIII  or Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (25 November 1881 – 3 June 1963), was Pope from 28 October 1958 until 1963. His legacy included the Second Vatican Council which paved the ways with reforms in the church which was widely accepted and has also brought simplicity yet pious changes with the Catholic population. He was beatified September 3, 2000.

Blessed Pope John Paull II or Karol Józef Wojtyła (18 May 1920 – 2 April 2005),  was Pope from 16 October 1978 until 2005. Known to be charismatic and youthful, he is one most loved pope of the 20th century. His legacy include the worldwide event, World Youth Day which draws millions of youth from all over the world to convene in prayer, friendship, and love. He was beatified May 1, 2010.

Pope John Paul was widely loved here in the Philippines as he has visited the country twice, first for the canonization of San Lorenzo Ruiz and the second is the World Youth Day 1995 where he held the biggest papal mass in Luneta. Relics of his visit to the Philippines are on display on various places to commemorate the life of the pope.
